UNIFORM & GROOMING

WHY UNIFORM?

Uniform is an important part of dance training as it promotes focus, discipline and equality within the studio. When all dancers wear the same required attire, it removes distractions, allows teachers to clearly see and correct technique, and ensures that movement is not hidden by unsuitable clothing. Uniform also helps create a sense of belonging and professionalism, reinforcing that dance is a structured learning environment. For these reasons, correct uniform will be compulsory for all classes and will be consistently upheld to ensure the safety, consistency and progress of every dancer.

WHERE TO PURCHASE

Uniform requirements for all students are kept on file at Bloch Malvern East, where families can also set up a free account to make future purchases simple and stress-free. Once registered, all uniform items and purchases are stored on file, so if you ever need to replace shoes or can’t remember sizing, it can be easily tracked and reordered.

Bloch Malvern East also offers a 10% discount to AMDC families on full-priced items (excluding sale stock), helping ensure families can access correct uniform consistently while keeping things affordable and convenient.

WHY GROOMING?

Good grooming is an important part of dance training as it teaches discipline, professionalism and respect for both the art form and the classroom environment. Hair that is neatly secured and appropriate dance attire help ensure dancers can move safely and comfortably without distractions. Proper grooming also allows teachers to clearly see posture, alignment and technique corrections, which is essential for safe and effective training. Developing strong grooming habits encourages dancers to take pride in themselves, present professionally and build the focus and responsibility expected within a structured dance environment.

GROOMING EXPECTATIONS

  • Hair must be neatly secured off the face for all classes: Ballet students are required to wear their hair in a clean and secure ballet bun unless otherwise advised. Students in Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Acro classes must have hair tied back securely. Fringes and shorter pieces of hair must be clipped back securely.

  • Jewellery is not to be worn in class, with the exception of small stud or sleeper earrings. Watches and Fitbits are not permitted.

  • Students must attend class in correct uniform and appropriate dance shoes, which should be clean, well-fitted and reserved for studio use only where possible.

  • Fingernails and toenails should be filed short for safety reasons, particularly in Acro and partner work.

  • Students should arrive well-presented and prepared for class with all required shoes, uniform pieces and hair accessories..

  • Grooming expectations apply to all students equally and form part of maintaining a respectful and professional learning environment.

Developing strong grooming habits encourages dancers to take pride in themselves, present professionally and build the focus and responsibility expected within a structured dance environment.

HOW TO CREATE A PERFECT BALLET BUN

A proper ballet bun should be:

* Secure enough to survive jumps and turns

* Flat to the head

* Smooth with no flyaways

* Positioned correctly (usually centred to the back of head, level with tops of the ears)

What You Need

* Hairbrush

* Fine comb

* Spray bottle with water

* Hair elastics

* Bobby pins

* Hair pins/U-pins

* Hair net (matching hair colour)

* Strong hairspray

Step 1: Start with Damp Hair, as this is MUCH easier to control.

* Spray hair lightly with water

* Brush thoroughly to remove knots

* Apply a little gel around the hairline

Step 2: Make a Ponytail - This is the most important step! A loose ponytail will create a loose bun, no matter how many pins you use to secure it!

  • Brush hair tightly into a ponytail.

  • Use tension from ALL angles: Underneath - Sides - Crown

  • Secure tightly with an elastic.

Step 3: Twist the Ponytail - firmly but not rope-tight, then wrap it around the elastic base in the direction of the twist.

For very long or thick hair you can split into two sections, wraping separately, pinning as you go

Step 4: Pin the Bun using hair pins/U-pins

To insert pins, Catch edge of bun, Scoop scalp hair and Push inward

Think “sew the bun to the head.”

Step 5: Add Hair Net - This is the secret to professional buns.

Your hair nets stop flyaways and loose ends sticking out

To wrap a matching hair net around the bun, Twist, Wrap again if needed and Pin securely.

Step 6: Smooth and Spray

Use gel or a wax stick to smooth baby hairs, part lines, flyaways and the nape of the neck. Finish with strong hairspray.
